OOm Interview Series: What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and how it works?

Esther: Hi everyone! Thank you for tuning in to our Zoom interview today. I’m really glad to have Jay join us once again. Hi Jay!


Jay: Hi everybody!


Esther: Hello! So for those of you who do not know, Jay manages OOm’s team of Account Managers who work directly with our clients to understand their business objectives as well as to have them optimize their digital campaigns.


So we have Jay with us here today to help to demystify some frequently asked questions with regards to Search Engine Optimization also known as SEO for short. And before we dive into the tough questions, let us start with an introduction of SEO.So Jay can you share with us what exactly is SEO.


Jay: Right, SEO is basically the process of getting your website ranking on the first page of the search engine. According to Hubspot, (30%) 75% (sorry) of users don’t click past the first page of the search result. So, yeah, it is basically down to consumer behavior, or when you search for something, it is getting your answers answered quickly. yeah so basically that’s the process of SEO.


Esther: Yeah I agree with you because I usually do not scroll past the first page of search engines as well. And I have a question for you, so let’s say I’m a business owner with a website that is currently not ranked on page 1 of the search engine, what would you suggest that I do?


Jay: Right, there’s multiple factors to SEO, one of which, major important one is the loading speed and user experience of the website. It reduces the bounce rate of your website. Another important factor is, of course, the content of the website. So, think about it, what is the main pull factor to having someone visit your website?


Esther: When the website has the answer to whatever the person is looking for.


Jay: Yes. So basically, Content plays a very important role. Say for example if you’re searching for shoes, right, and you don’t know have content about shoes, Google will not rank your site. So, Content is King over here (yup). And okay yeah, So, Content comes in many forms yeah, it can be blogs, images sucha as infographics or even videos.


Esther: That makes so much sense. So how long does it usually take for people to see an improvement on their website’s ranking on search engines.


Jay: Right, that’s a really very good question, because a lot of people ask that. So it really vary from industry to industry. I have an example here of a client which I personally work with, just let me share screen with you right now. Let me know if you see it.


Esther: Yes I see it!


Jay: So yeah, this is the graph of the average keyword rankings, that’s ranking on the search result page yeah, so if you can see here. Can you see this flat graph? yeah


Esther: Hmm (nods yes)


Jay: So from here it is ranking at about 100 or beyond, so it’s really very far back from the Google search result page. Why is this so? It’s because the website is new. Right? And of course, through constant optimization, you can see the keywords ranking picking up and yeah it’s ranking. And it’s also picking up then after. And of course today, it’s still going yeah. So what I’m trying to get at, is that SEO is not a short term process, it is a long marathon. Yup.


Esther: Yeah thank you for sharing that example, it’s really insightful information and it shows that SEO really garners long term results. And I have another question for you. So let’s say, as a business owner or a marketer who do not have the expertise or the manpower to actually manage SEO, is it expensive to hire an agency to do it for them.


Jay: Right, another good question! So for SEO, although its is organic right?, it takes time and effort to build up. So it’s on-site optimization and of course off-site optimizations, a lot of things needs to be done, I don’t want to go on to the technicalities but the thing is you need a team. Of course, it is better to engage an agency to look out for you because they would be the ones that, as a Google Premier Partner, and of course, they would have the inside and outs of the latest news to the Google’s algorithms. Yup.


Esther: Hmm (nods yes) I see. Yeah so SEO definitely seems like a worthy investment. And I have a last question which I’m sure is of great concern to many, business owners as well as marketers out there. So is SEO beneficial for businesses during the current pandemic?


Jay: Right so, it is definitely beneficial for this pandemic because right now the economy is slowly opening up and it will be a few more months ’til life goes back to normal. So, if businesses are not onto SEO, they should be looking at it right now because once economy opens up, full fledge, and people starts to search onto your industry, at least you can be found. so yeah.


Esther: Yeah this is a really encouraging and practical piece of information that businesses can take with them. And i do agree that instead of being passive by ceasing all marketing activities during this period of time, businesses should actually make us of this lull period to prepare themselves. So that they can emerge back stronger when the economy goes back to normal.


Jay: yeah correct that’s right.


Esther: Yeah so thanks Jay for the insightful information on how businesses can leverage on SEO. It has been great having you here.
