I’ve spent the past few weeks going through the public course pages of AI courses in Singapore, including our own. They all promise “practical AI skills”. Underneath, they’re built very differently. Some pack everything into one long course. Others are a single 2-day introduction. And the fee after subsidy ranges from about S$300 to nearly S$1,000.
So I put three other providers side by side with OOm Institute’s AI series, on what actually matters when you’re deciding. That means what you pay, how much time you give up, what you learn and who’s teaching it.

How Much AI Do I Actually Need to Learn for My Job?
Most AI courses teach one or more of three layers of skill: using AI well, applying it to your work, and building AI agents and automations.

Make sure layer 1 is solid before you build at layer 3. People who automate too early usually end up automating unclear instructions, which just gets them bad output faster.
What Should I Look Out for Beyond the Course Outline?
Looking at these providers together, three things stood out to me that a fee table alone won’t show you.
1. Your time costs more than the fee
Provider A asks for around 24 hours of evenings and weekends, Provider B asks for three days of leave and Provider C asks for two. Most of our AI courses take one or two days.
When I talk to managers, time away from work is usually their biggest concern about training, so it’s worth counting total hours and days of leave, not just the course length on the brochure.

2. More topics isn't more useful if you won't use them
RAG and MCP are genuinely useful skills, but only if your job involves connecting AI to company systems. A designer gets more from learning to create AI visuals that make people stop and look.
A marketer gets more from prompt engineering for research and content. An operations lead gets more from mapping which workflows to automate.An all-in-one course makes everyone sit through everything. Choose the depth your role needs.
3. One course is rarely the end
AI changes every few months. A single course leaves you to figure out the next step yourself. I’d look at whether the provider offers more than one AI course, ideally split by job function, so you can add design, video, automation or a new tool like Claude Cowork when your role calls for it, without starting from scratch.
When Should I Choose Another Provider Instead?
I’d rather you pick the right course than the wrong one with us.
If you want to write code, work with APIs, build RAG systems or move into an AI engineering role, a technical course like Provider A or Provider B is the better fit.
If you only need a basic introduction to everyday tools like Copilot and DeepSeek, Provider C covers that well.

Will My AI Course Still Be Useful Next Year?
1. AI now completes whole tasks
Tools like Claude Cowork and ChatGPT Work can read your files and produce a finished report or dashboard. Microsoft’s 2026 Work Trend Index found the number of active AI agents in Microsoft 365 grew 15 times in a year. A course that only teaches you to write better prompts is already behind.
2. Checking AI's work is the skill that matters.
In the same study, workers ranked quality control of AI output (50%) and critical thinking (46%) as the top skills for working with AI. Look for a course that teaches you to review and fact-check what AI produces, not just generate it.
3. Using AI responsibly is now expected.
