In-Depth: Bookmarking + Directories

Contents

One of the secrets of link building is finding out ways on how you can let your content be seen by more people out on the web. Getting to post on a high authority websites isn’t enough, obviously. Yes there are channels out there that can help you spread that content to more people like you’re making a really good sandwich on social media, but there are more things out there that can help you achieve your goal.

Social Bookmarking is an activity that can help and give you the boost you need in SEO. There’s a lot of other stuff, yes, but today, the spotlight is on this one.

Doing this is very easy, trendy and is practically free.

People do social bookmarking when they see something they like and want to come back to at a later time. This usually is done on publicly accessible social websites. What happens there and how does that help? Well, these websites then collect all sorts of links and content from all around the web. This then means that other people will then have access to these contents. Basically, you content gets more exposure on social bookmarking sites. Social bookmarking sites have a lot of traffic in them. (for our young Padawans out there, when we use the term “traffic” here, it means these places have a lot of people coming in and out at a regular basis)

This gives your content the opportunity to be re-shared again on other places. The more the merrier right?

Now before you go insane and go to Reddit, Stumbleupon and all those great book marking sites or check some of the most sought after social bookmarking sites out there, keep in mind that the contents that are to be shared in these sites should be of top quality. Not just written well, but are actually interesting and useful. Why would anyone look at and re-share a boring content? Remember that contents here gets re-shared with others because they find it exciting and interesting.

One thing you need to remember when going through these social bookmarks is that you should be good at utilizing Tags. Like what was mentioned above, social bookmarking sites are filled to the brim with different stories, articles and other kinds of contents found all over the net. Make sure that the content you will be sharing will be easily categorized and seen.

Lastly, the most predictable reaction when one learns and starts to realize the amount of power and possibilities social bookmarking can provide is when people start abusing it and spamming it with all their links. Every possible small content they create has got to be shared in here. It’s not a bad thing, but remember that spamming is spamming. Time your posts. Make sure that you’re not smothering the community on these sites with your content. Just chill and share.

Now comes another quite abused part of SEO, Directory posting.

Directories in SEO are these sites in which you register or submit your site, with all its details and information. There are countless sites out there that act as directories for websites. And if you think about it, the fact that the details of your site (as well as a link back to it) found all across the web on these directories is a very good thing. Google recognizes the different jobs of each websites that exist on the web. So if it sees that you’re included on a few directory sites all throughout the web, especially if these directories are of high authority, Google will definitely remember you. Not the “oh yeah I totally remember you and one day I’ll rank you when I have the time” type of thing, it will learn that you are an active business and will index you easier.

Two things here that you need to remember however is that you need to watch out for the directories that are of low quality. People over the years have been using directories since it’s an easy way to “build” links even without content. You’re basically sharing your whole site or business to these directories. Because of that, there can be instances that websites might have become too spammy. To avoid these, check the PA/DA of the directories you’re planning to post at. (Page Authority / Domain Authority.) This way you’re safe knowing that the authority is high enough that spam links wouldn’t be that close to you.

Another thing is that when you start building links, you should only use these sites at the beginning of your campaign.

Logically speaking, sharing your site on directories is like properly introducing your site to the world. After you’ve done that, you move on to other link building techniques. Why would you keep re introducing your website using directories? You can re-use directories if for example you changed details or you’ve added businesses / websites. If you can no longer go back to your old listings and edit the information, this is the way to go.
